Writer's Guidelines
Revised: January 25, 2005
WynterGreene primarily publishes non-fiction and anecdotal articles of interest to Canadian Pagans, especially those living in Eastern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. We occasionally have openings for regular columnists. Four issues a year are themed. To check our upcoming issue topics, please check the Upcoming Themes section of our website. For deadlines, check the submission deadlines section.
1. Submission Format: Submissions and query letters should be sent via e-mail as an attachment in an MS Word file (.doc) or as plain text (.txt) or rich text format (.rtf) document. Spell-check and grammar-check your articles before sending them. They should follow standard punctuation spacing (1 space after comma, etc.). Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be returned.
Submissions should be accompanied by a brief 10-25 word bio to accompany the article, should it be published. Ideally, the bio should give some insight into your authority to write on your chosen topic.
2. Language: Submissions may be made in either English or French.
3. Article type: We will accept and review submissions of fiction, non-fiction, editorials, book and event reviews, poetry, etc.
In the case of book reviews, WynterGreene has specific requirements for what should be included. Please consult our book review guidelines before submitting a review.
Please note that we publish only a very limited amount of fiction and poetry.
4. Length: Articles may generally be of any length. We accept many short articles (500-900 words). Feature articles may run from 1200 to 1600 words. Longer articles will be also considered and occasionally published. Please e-mail the magazine if you would like to work on one of these feature pieces.
5. References: Articles should be referenced. If you quote a source, or use a source in the course of researching an article, you must note what that source is. Please feel free to use footnotes if you consider them necessary.
6. Deadlines: Deadlines for future issues are available on the WynterGreene web site. Submissions handed in after the editorial deadline may be held for a future issue.
7. Submission Review: WynterGreene will review all submissions and reserves the right to refuse any submission that the editors do not feel fit into the content of the magazine. WynterGreene also reserves the right to reject any submission whose sole or main purpose is promotional. We may also request revisions to non-editorial, review or opinion articles that appear overly biased or unbalanced.
8. Response Time: We regret that not all submissions to WynterGreene can be published. In general, we try to respond to submissions and queries within 30 days.
9. Editing: WynterGreene reserves the right to edit submissions that are accepted for publication. All submissions undergo basic copy editing for spelling and grammar according to the CP style. We also perform occasional fact-checking and may ask you for references. If further editing is required, the editors generally try to contact the contributor for approval of the edited article before it is published. However, we do not guarantee that we will be able to do this.
WynterGreene's Editors may also choose to hold an article for another issue in order to work closely with the author on editing.
10. Editing Poetry: Submissions of poetry will not be edited without consulting the author.
11. Contributor's Rights: The contributor retains full copyright and allows his/her work to be published, properly credited, in the WynterGreene magazine and on the WynterGreene web site. At any time, the work will be removed from the website at the written request of the contributor.
Plagiarism : WynterGreene take plagiarism very seriously and will not publish anything that we feel does not respect the rights of other authors or original copyright. We consider the following as examples of plagiarism:
Direct copying and pasting of information for books, articles (print or electronic), emails, message boards, classroom handouts, etc, without crediting the original source.
Using information or ideas from a books, articles (print or electronic), emails, message boards, classroom handouts, etc, that is similar in wording or flow, without crediting the original source (in other words, the subtle rewording of someone else's work).
The inclusion of graphics or artwork that are not your own. If you would like to submit a specific graphic to accompany your article, please identify the source so that we may seek permission to use it.
