Canadian Pagan Festival Scene Growing
It has been more than two decades since the first Pagan festival was held in Canada, and we have certainly come a long way. The festival fires will be lit this summer in all but one province. Newfoundland is yet to have a summer gathering of its own. Although Newfoundland holds annual Pagan Pride events, no pagan festival has yet been conceived. The festival landscape in the rest of the Atlantic provinces has blossomed in recent years, however. July saw two of the newest provincial gatherings in Canada. PEI held its second weekend gathering at Brackley Beach National Park. The New Brunswick community attempted to emulate the PEI community's weekend gathering but were turned away by Fundy National Park on the grounds that they are not an organised group with a charter. Nonetheless, the third annual day-long Health, Wellness, and Spiritual Festival was held in Saint John, which is intended as a Pagan event, though not exclusively so.

Over 30 Neo-Pagans from across Montreal and as far north as St-Jerome gathered together on Saturday April 23rd at the Scottish Centre in Lasalle for a day of workshops, networking and discussion. Topics included online discussion lists, sex and the craft, Pagan parenting and life-cycles of community organizations. The highlight of the day was a panel discussion on Do-able Montreal Pagan Community with some very familiar faces from the Montreal Pagan community as well as a couple of newcomers. A transcription of the conference should be available shortly.

Edmonton Welcomes Canadian Neo-Pagans
Over 100 Neo-pagans from across Canada, and Canadian Pagans from as far away as Great Britain and San Francisco met in Edmonton over Victoria Day weekend for Gaia Gathering - Canada's first National Pagan Conference. At the end of the weekend, everyone agreed: The conference was a big success - Why didn't we do it sooner!
The first full day of the conference kicked off with a presentation from Kevin Marron, author of the book Witches, Pagans and Magic in the New Age, who spoke to us about Paganism and Canadian attitudes toward Paganism 20 years ago when he wrote the book. The rest of the conference brought us solidly into the present with panel-audience discussions on issues pertinent to Paganism currently, as well as the presentation of academic papers by Canadian Pagan scholars. The panels and presentations sparked much discussion among participants, both in the conference rooms and outside of them.
Evenings were taken up with film screenings, sing-alongs, circle dancing, and informal small group discussions or planning groups formed around some of the issues arising out of the conference.
Halifax Wins Bid for Gaia Gathering 2006
Mark you calendars and start thinking about fresh lobster: The second annual Canadian National Pagan Conference will be held in Halifax over the Victoria Day long weekend, May 19th to 22nd, 2006. The decision to hold the conference in Halifax was made at the Annual General meeting of the first Canadian National Pagan Conference - Gaia Gathering - in Edmonton. At the same time, it was decided that the third annual conference will be held in 2007 in Winnipeg, also over the Victoria Day long Weekend.
Participate in the 2005 Canadian Pagan Survey
My name is Síân Reid, and I am a researcher in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University in Ottawa. I have been involved in the neopagan movement for 22 years. In 1995/6, I distributed a survey and conducted interviews about neopagans in Canada and their experiences. This research was the basis for my PhD dissertation, Disorganized Religion: An Exploration of the Neopagan Craft in Canada (2001).
It has been 10 years since I undertook my original research, and it has since become apparent that paganisms are the fastest growing religions in Canada. In 1981, 2295 people listed themselves as pagan on the Census. In 1991, that doubled, to 5530. On the 2001 Census, this number had almost quadrupled, to 21,085. This research project is designed to follow up on my previous research. It is my intention to continue to collect information about neopagans every ten years, in order to track changes in the composition of the movement. This research benefits neopagans by making available systematically collected information about the movement that can be used to respond to anti-pagan discourse, as well as to inform further studies of the movement. Research findings will be disseminated through academic conferences and publications.
If you would currently identify yourself, in your own mind, as a pagan or neopagan, of any strand or tradition, you are over 18 years of age, and you are resident in Canada, I would encourage you to support this ongoing research by taking the time to complete this questionnaire. This research has been approved by the Carleton University Ethics Committee. The survey is anonymous; it is not numbered or marked in any way that would allow me to identify an individual respondent.
For more information and to get a PDF copy of the survey, please visit: http://www.canadianpagansurvey.ca/
If you have questions, require additional copies of the survey, or would like to volunteer for the interview stage of this study, please do not hesitate to contact me at the address below:
