Toronto Pagan Conference 2008
Mark you calendars! The next Toronto Pagan Conference will be held between February 29th and March 2nd, 2008.

The theme for the conference is "Walk the Talk; A Journey of Responsibility." As Pagans most of us strive to live as much in harmony with our Earth and our environment as possible. But are we doing enough? The 2008 conference will focus on what we, as Pagans, are doing to "leave our world a better place" and to make sure that we are making a sustainable tomorrow for our children and our children's children. What are we doing to make sure that OUR collective Environmental footprint does not leave a detrimental mark on Mother Earth.

The keynote speaker is Hugo Bonjean, authour of In the Eyes of Anahita: an adventure in search of Humanity, who will help us explore what we can do to become more ecologically and environmentally aware along our journey as we travel our individual spiritual paths.

Montreal Spring Celebrations
This spring, Montreal Pagans got together for several well-attended public rituals. On April 29th, Pagans of all stripes braved the damp weather in Angrignon Park for a public ritual organised by Montreal's Reclaiming community. The ritual centred around the awakening of the living earth. Following the ritual there was a feast and the traditional maypole dance.

The Concordia University Pagan Society (CUPS) also held an open ritual in Concordia's Multi-Faith Chaplaincy. The ritual was a celebration of the new life and energy of the season, and participants raised healing energy. The ritual was followed by a meeting in which the new CUPS executive was elected.

On May 13th, the Order of the Golden Dawn held their first public ritual in recent memory at Le Mélange Magique. In keeping with Golden Dawn tradition, Judeo-Christian ideas and Egyptian mythology were used to create a moving ritual of the Eucharist. It is rare for ceremonial traditions to hold public rituals and this was a rare treat for all who attended.

Montreal Sabbats on Hiatus
Since the public Samhain Ritual held at Sala Rosa last November, Montreal Sabbats has been without a coordinator and hence missing in action. For the past few years, Montreal Sabbats has ensured that each spoke of the wheel of the year was marked with a public ritual in Montreal. They achieved this by empowering other groups from various different traditions to perform public rituals by securing a space and publicizing the events. They also performed the public rituals themselves, when no other group stepped forward to lead.

Even though Montreal Sabbats is currently inactive, public Pagan celebrations in the city can (and will) continue, so long as someone steps up and makes it happen. Fortunately, groups wishing to hold a public ritual still have some resources available to them. Le Mélange Magique has recently re-opened its upstairs space for public ritual for under 30 people; and the Montreal Pagan Resource Centre (MPRC) has offered help with networking and publicity (jdhobbes@yahoo.ca). In the warm summer weather, outside is also an attractive option for public ritual.

If you would like to get involved to resurrect Montreal Sabbats, email them at: montreal_sabbats@yahoo.ca

Obituary: Knick Knack
One of the two cats that live at Le Mélange Magique passed away Friday March 9th after a long illness. Knick Knack spent 10 years of her life living in « Mélange » and many people appreciated her affection and sociability.

The last year has not been easy for Knick Knack: she suffered from seizures and poor health, but with the help of her caretakers, carried on as best she could. But in the last couple of months, she had been quite sick and was ready to pass on. Even Tequila (her roommate) knew something was amiss and visitors to the shop remarked on how Tequila's mannerism had changed from curmudgeon to affectionate and even doting on Knick Knack.. Knick Knack was a simple cat, but to all who knew her, she was a friend and welcome sight at Le Mélange Magique. She will be missed.

Pagans March for Peace
Pagans took to the streets of Montreal in solidarity with the thousands who demonstrated all over North America on Saturday, March 17th to mark the 4th anniversary of the War in Iraq. The blizzard that raged around them did little to dissuade the 500 Montreal demonstrators.

The Pagan contingent was focused on the elements, and carried colourful signs representing earth, air, fire, water and centre, designed to call upon the strengths of each element needed in the ongoing work for peace around the world. In preparation for the march, the contingent met for three weekly peace circles in which they explored ideas of war, politics, hope, and action through ritual, discussion, and trance.

West Island Drumming Circles
In December a drumming circle started up on the West Island. It is held in a nice cedar chalet in a park in Beaconsfield. Thanks to the good location we can make as much noise as we like. So far the group has been a great success with 25 drummers at the last circle, from beginner to advanced.

Each circle has a theme. A recent circle involved drumming for a self-healing. At this circle one of the participants taught a drum blessing and told the story of Brown Bear, and how he takes our sorrows and carries them for us. During the drumming, Brown Bear's presence and a wonderful release was felt by all.

The experience of drum circles is difficult to describe. The pounding drums build energy like a fire that cleanses, renews and heals. Feelings of deep joy carry us far away from our everyday lives and cares.

The drumming circle is open to everyone, no experience is necessary. There will be opportunities to experience some Shamanic journey work and we have extra drums. So bring your drums if you have them, rattles, blankets and pillows to sit on and plenty of enthusiasm.

More information about upcoming drum circles is at www.wiccansacredcircle.com

Gaia Gathering - Canada's National Pagan Conference
Winnipeg will play host to the third annual Gaia Gathering on Victoria Day weekend, May 18-21. Pagans from across Canada share their experiences, exchange information and learn from and with each other. The conference is based on the principle of dialogue and discussion, rather than the

The keynote speaker at this year's conference will be Tim Ward, author of Savage Breast. There is also an important musical component of this conference. The song sharing circle involves sharing original Pagan songs and chants written by Canadians. The weekend begins and ends with an inclusive ritual, performed by the host city community, to represent the diversity of the local or national Pagan community. Throughout the weekend, there are also many other events such as film screenings, a banquet, music performance, a vendors' area, and much after hours singing, drumming and socializing.
