Special issue : Handfasting

In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust
BY Kelly

He proposed to me on Lammas, just nine months before.

April 21st was the perfect date, a year after we became boyfriend and girlfriend. The perfect time - in the morning for new beginnings. The perfect phase of the moon, the new moon. I woke up that morning and put on the song, "The Day" by The The. "This is the day where things fall into place. This is the day your life will surely change".

We drove together to the park in our new car.

Everything was perfect.

But it was damn cold!

It was sunny, but windy. I don't recall the actual temperature. All I knew was that my white-and-gold silk wedding dress was not a very good wind breaker. I had bought nice white sandals but opted for my black winter boots that day.

If I could change one thing about our perfect day, it would be to make it just an itsy bit warmer. I think I would have enjoyed the handfasting more if I hadn't been shivering. Dave and Julie did a fantastic job despite the elements (no pun intended!) Candles blew out, papers flew, and for many guests it was their first time in a circle. My priest and priestess made everyone feel comfortable. I had watched Dave and Julie's own love blossom. We wanted lovers to join lovers, so having them perform the ritual was another perfect fit.

We walked into the circle and were anointed. We exchanged vows and rings and did our "three firsts" as a couple; the symbolic Great Rite, Tied the Knot and Jumped the Broom.

As I kissed my perfect husband (well, no man is completely perfect!) I marvelled at what I still think is a miracle - finding someone of the same religion and morals to share my life with.

Walking into that circle that day brought new meaning to the words, with perfect love and perfect trust.
