Handfasting and Wedding Rituals
By Tannin Schwartzstein and Raven Kaldera
Llewellyn Publications; ISBN 0738704709
$24.95
Handfasting and Wedding Rituals is a great book if you are looking for inspiration planning a handfasting, whether it be your own or as clergy for someone else. Co-authors Schwartzstein and Kaldera offer a wide variety of rituals from their personal experiences as Pagan clergy, including some for interfaith ceremonies, same-sex couples, polyamorous groups, and trans-gender or bisexual individuals who want to acknowledge their diversity. All rituals are graded on a scale of one to three according to how obviously Pagan the ceremony is. Personal anecdotes and advice also appear throughout the book.
However, for anyone looking for a bit more than ritual ideas, this book will fall short. If you are planning your own handfasting, the authors offer little in terms of practical or logistical advice. If you are Pagan clergy, or have been asked to perform a handfasting, this book does little to offer any type of guidance beyond ritual structure, although a very brief section at the end of the book discusses some of the ethical questions that Pagan clergy may come across when asked to perform a handfasting ceremony. It certainly does not address any spiritual issues of handfasting, rather choosing to approach the subject as a celebration of love between then partners involved.
