Winter 2006 : Turning the Wheel: A New Look and Feel for WynterGreene

You may have noticed that we gave you a little bit of extra time to read your last issue of WynterGreene. Probably too much time. WynterGreene is completely dependent of its volunteers who do everything from writing to production. Last fall we lost our layout artist and finding a reliable replacement has proved to be a long and challenging quest. But find one we did. Thanks to some generous financial donations from readers who heard about our plight, we have hired Jars of Stars to produce this and the next three issues. They will also take on the responsibility of printing each issue, and ensuring quality control on production. We are very happy to have them as part of our team.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, you may also notice a few changes in the look of the magazine. With a new layout team, and it also being the season of new beginnings, we decided now was the perfect time to refresh our format. When WynterGreene relaunched at Imbolc of 2003, it was as an eight-page informal publication. As such, the layout was that of a short newsletter. Well WynterGreene grew. It is no longer a newsletter but more like a magazine. We have cover art, feature articles, regular columnists, book reviews and even puzzles. It's time our layout grew with it.

Starting this issue, we have launched a new section called "Perspectives." This is your place to share your thoughts and experiences from a Pagan perspective. Next issue, we will be launching a new column called "Top Picks" in which different people will offer their top choice of books, videos and other products along a specific theme. This replaces Raven's Book News. If you would like to share your perspective or top pick, drop us a line and let us know.

Toward the back of the issue, our book review section has been completely redesigned. The new look makes it both easier to read and to see which book jacket belongs to which review. We will also be adding a new english column and a Pagan Family section in the coming months.

Although we have introduced new sections and a new look, many things stay the same. We continue to have a Community Focus section that highlights a local group, individual or business. As well each issue continues to have two feature articles, usually coordinated to a specific theme, and one short story serial. And of course, what issue of WynterGreene would be complete without Pagangrams and Community Listings?

Finally, this issue plays homage to Montreal.

Our feature article is an interview with Arin Murphy-Hiscock. A well-known local teacher, workshop leader, and coven leader (among other things), Arin published two books in 2005: the first on spellcraft and the second on solitary Wicca. A third book on green witchcraft is due for release in May 2006. Both of her published books are reviewed in this issue. However, she's not our only local author. Marie-Renée Patry, owner of Charme et Sortilege, also published a book in 2005 called Sapiences. Her book is reviewed in this issue as well. Other local features in this issue are a review of Québec's national library, La Grande Bibliothèque, from a Pagan point of view; some personal perspectives on public ritual in Montreal; and an event review of a lecture on Pagan ethics by Ottawa author and scholar Shelley Rabinovitch. We also include a review of her latest book, An Ye Harm None, in this issue. Links to additional features about Montreal from previous issues will also be put on our website (www.wyntergreene.ca). We hope you enjoy both the new look and the content of this issue. We welcome feedback on either and love to receive correspondence.
