Ostara / Spring 2004

Hail and welcome to the new look and year for WynterGreene!

Spring is generally a time for planting seeds and sowing new beginnings after the introspective winter season. The year 2004 marks my second year as Editor of WynterGreene. Last year was one of learning, as I discovered the details of pulling together and publishing a small newsletter or magazine. This spring I want to start planting the seeds that will help WynterGreene grow and develop in order to better serve our local communities, and perhaps eventually even our Canadian community at large.

Starting this issue, we will be printing on 60% post-consumer, non-bleached, recycled paper purchased through a local paper buying cooperative. Details about the benefits of recycled paper, as well as about the paper buying cooperative, can be found on the next page (p3) of this issue.

In an effort to share the visual talents of our many local artists and illustrators, WynterGreene will be featuring cover art each issue. We welcome and encourage submissions of artwork for our cover, and look forward to receiving them.

Also starting this issue, the equinox and solstice issues will be devoted to a particular topic or theme. For Ostara, in keeping with our move to more environmentally-friendly paper, we decided on the theme of "The Environment". Other upcoming themes are handfastings, pagan music, and family. Take a look at the back cover of this issue for details about these topics, including submission deadlines. For the handfastings issues, we are particularly interested in hearing from folks who are familiar with the marriage laws in Quebec or Ontario, or have handfasting stories, tips or ideas that they would like to share.

We have also made some changes behind the scenes. Okay, maybe not changes, more like getting more organised. When I took over publishing WynterGreene last year, it was very important that the newsletter be bilingual and include contributions from the both the anglophone and francophone communities. Starting next issue, Isahée Rowan will be managing the francophone content of WynterGreene. As French Content Manager, she will be liaising with our French-speaking contributors, advertisers, and community groups, as well as helping to ensure that an overall balance between French and English is achieved.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the WynterGreene translators upon whom I have relied so heavily in past issues. Sulye, for helping with the initial translations of WynterGreene, Marc C for helping with numerous article translations and French proofreading last year, and more recently Coral for his rapid turn around of my characteristically last minute translation and proofreading requests.

Another aspect of WynterGreene that is very important to me, is the community building and accessibility one. Each issue of WynterGreene lists local pagan groups, organizations and professionals, as well as pagan classifieds and personals. All these listings are free. Our new Listings Coordinator, Cashmere will be keeping track of our regular group and professional listings, making sure that they are as comprehensive and accurate as possible. If you have a group or service you'd like to list in WynterGreene, please let us know.

The WynterGreene website will soon be getting a much-needed facelift thanks to our new Web Witch, Freya. She's still working on the look and architecture of the site, so we'll just have to hang in there with the current temporary site for the time being. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as the new website is up and running.

Finally, in the coming year, WynterGreene anticipates registering as a non-profit organization. In doing so, we hope to become eligible to receive some government-funded grants available to either small magazine publishers or non-profit cultural associations. The process is also a necessary one to enable WynterGreene to offer a subscription service. We are desperately looking for people to help us out with the non-profit application process, grant applications and the book-keeping requirements of running a non-profit organization. If you are interested, please let us know.

Phew! I think that"s it for new this issue. We always look forward to hearing from you. You can reach WynterGreene by email at wyntergreene@yahoo.ca.

Now go out and enjoy the simple pleasures of the ever-strengthening Sun above us, and the stirrings of the fertile Earth that supports us. It's Springtime!
